At CAD Designers we are always looking for new and interesting ways that computers can aid in the design, construction and implementation of jobs. One of the most intriguing advancements in the CAD field revolves around the quickly evolving uses of 3D printing technology.
Local Motors who have been working on the Strati, the world’s first 3D-printed car recently passed another major milestone, bringing us even closer to the reality of driving a printed car. The company awarded Kevin Lo, designer of Reload Redacted – Swim Sport $7,500 for his innovative car design.
3D Printing Cars. One Part at a Time.
Lo’s design varies from the Strati in ways that lead to a safer, more practical 3D-printed car. On the subject Lo commented, “If you look at Strati, it was meant to be a one-piece body — which is a beautiful idea — but the reality is if you take it to a highway level… you have to include safety.” One of the many benefits of using computer aided design to print parts of a vehicle would be in the event of a collision.
The option to reprint an old part or quickly print an upgrade is a very exciting possibility for anyone who has been hit with a large auto bill in the past. While a 3D-printed vehicle may be a long way off from reaching a consumer audience Local Motors does hope to introduce a low-speed electric vehicle next year with a highway-ready model ready to print in 2017.
